Young workers in the public sector and trade union renewal
16 - 18 September, Sesimbra (Portugal)

The Education Department of the European Trade Union Institute organised a joint seminar with the European Federation of Public Service Unions. The aims of this activity gathering young trade union representatives from 12 countries were to:

  • Raise awareness of the role of a European trade union in the social dialogue as well as help understanding the role of the European decision making in national youth policies in the public sector.

  • Study different initiatives of recruiting and training at national level to support the joint efforts of trade union revival in the whole of the European public sector trade unions.

  • Discuss about the role of young and precarious workers in the public sector and what proposals can be constructed to help the trade unions in the crisis management so young workers are not the losers of such a situation.

  • Provide participants with a practical knowledge and understanding of the functioning of a European trade union federation and the whole of the EU decision making process.

  • Foster capacity building to improve the training and recruiting drives in the different national countries.

The seminar was opened by Pablo Sanchez, (EPSU) and Jean-Claude Le Douaron (ETUI). After an exchange about youth activities in their respective trade union and the various implementations of the European Youth Policies, the participants exchanged their experiences in working groups.

Pablo Sanchez gave an overview over European Youth Policies and EPSU priorities and Social Dialogue Activities. A draft position paper on future youth activities in EPSU was also presented and amended after some discussions. Its possible implications for trade union activities at European and national level were also analysed.

Given the level of youth unemployment and the increasing proporting of precarious employment forms a top priority for trade unions should be to reinforce youth activities in EPSU and its affiliated trade unions. PSI activities were also presented by Sandra Vermuyten.
